A Rainy Weekend

1. The forecast promised sun, and by Saturday morning it was wrong.
2. Rain arrived at eight and settled in like a guest with no plans.
3. The trip to the lake was canceled before anyone finished breakfast.
4. Nobody complained much, since the week had been long enough.
5. My brother pulled an old puzzle from under the stairs.
6. Half the pieces were missing, which we discovered two hours later.
7. Lunch was whatever the kitchen had, and it was surprisingly good.
8. In the afternoon the rain grew heavier and the lights flickered.
9. We lit candles early, more for the effect than the need.
10. My father told the same story he tells every winter.
11. Everyone knew the ending and nobody stopped him.
12. By evening the street outside had become a shallow river.
13. Sunday came clear and bright, as if apologizing for the day before.
14. We went to the lake after all, and the water was freezing.
